Contributes to Planning for Profitable 3G Services in Asia
Today,
the Managing Director of 1rstWAP, Mr Pascal Lalanne, spoke at a leading
mobile industry event in Jakarta, which examined the prospects for
3G in Asia, about the worldwide market demand for 3G services in light
of recent market developments.
Held
at the Jakarta Hilton over 2 days, the keynote speaker at "3G
Seminar 2002: Opportunities and Challenges" was Mr. Djamhari
Sirat, the Minister for the Directorate General of Post and Telecommunications.
Other speakers were industry leaders from throughout Asia, including
Mr Willy Sabry from Alcatel, Mr Sumedi Kirono from Indosat MultiMedia
Mobile, Ms Angela Singhal Whiteford from Nortel and Mr. Christopher
Beck from Siemens.
Speakers
at the conference organized by ICE Telecoms and Infotama Teravisi
covered topics ranging from today's global 3G development to the
unique nature of 3G's challenges. With over 45 hand-picked attendees
from Indonesia's mobile and telecom industry, interaction between
the audience and industry figures was strongly encouraged and facilitated
by a question and answer forum atmosphere.
Under
the title "3G Market Study", Mr Lalanne explained some
of the key areas of 3G development and their relation to business.
These areas included 3G service revenue opportunities and a proposal
of a 3G service framework that looks at the market opportunity from
the user's perspective.
Pointing
out that due to the current negative market conditions, the short-term
revenue generated by 3G services will be reduced by about 17% through
2004 from what was expected - a total reduction of $10 billion -
Mr Lalanne said, "Over the long term, however, services enabled
by 3G technology still represent a substantial market opportunity
... using conservative assumptions ... of over one trillion dollars
over the decade."
While
discussing worldwide demand for 3G services, Mr Lalanne warned the
audience that the commercialization date for video related services
within the rich voice and MMS categories had been delayed to begin
one year later than previously expected. This reflected the technical
complexity in commercializing these services.
Mr
Lalanne highlighted the importance of strategies for introducing
services successfully, especially in order to avoid the negative
impacts of continued global economic uncertainties and the challenges
that various technologies such as WiFi or the wireless LAN could
bring.
As
a member of the international UMTS Forum, and with two million registrants
to its own services, 1rstWAP is heavily involved in discussions
for the development of mobile technology, especially as it relates
to messaging and payment services used by consumers.
During
the same period as the 3G conference in Jakarta, the UMTS Forum
General Assembly #27 is being held in Rome from October 8 to 10.
1rstWAP is represented by Director of Engineering, Mr Josef Fuchs
who is involved in discussions and forums on topics including wireless
LAN and mobile TLDs (Top Level Domains).
