Participates in Annual Fun Day for Disadvantaged Children
 |
Global
mobile messaging developer and service provider, 1rstWAP,
has supported its special charity, the Indonesian Sunshine
Children Organization (ISCO) once again to hold the annual
gathering for hundreds of the disadvantaged street children
that it supports. The event was held in the Ragunan Zoo in
Jakarta, on July 6, 2003. 1rstWAP is the sole supporter of
ISCO, and over 450 students between 5 and 10 from the Greater
Jakarta area, attended the annual gathering out of a total
of more than 1,000 students in the program from across Indonesia.

There
is no universal, free schooling system in Indonesia, even
though it has a population of over 220 million and a very
high proportion of young people. Though many parents work
hard, it is impossible to pay for their childs schooling with
the wages from many low paying jobs which are often only tens
of dollars per month. ISCO, through the sole support of 1rstWAP,
has given these children the opportunity and the support to
receive an education. Sadly, if not for ISCOs help many of
the children would otherwise have to beg on the streets instead
of attending school.
Sponsorship
of this annual gathering by 1rstWAP enabled the children to meet
each other in a fun and safe environment and for parents to enjoy
some recreational and leisure acitivities with their children. This
is particularly important for these families because very often
school recreational programs are too expensive for them to be involved
in. Activities included awards for the high achieving students and
many games which met with much excitement and a feeling of happiness
and pride from the children.
About
ISCO
The Indonesian Sunshine Children Organization
(ISCO) is a non-government organization that was established in
1999 to help needy children in areas where due to poverty and other
factors, they are likely to become street children. Currently ISCO
has 9 program areas 5 in Greater Jakarta, 2 in Medan and 2 in Surabaya
with over 1,000 children sponsored in 2003.
ISCOs main objective is to prevent marginal
children from becoming street children, and to give these children
an equal chance to get better education. The programs also cover
educational support, children activity centers, health and nutrition,
shelter protection, and child advocacy
